The Path to LTE Overlay Optimization

Long Term Evolution, or LTE, has clearly earned its place as the new unifying wireless specification across the globe for wireless operators. Many wireless operators are considering how to best deliver mobile broadband using LTE usually as an overlay to existing 2G and 3G networks. Questions on spectrum, base stations and LTE overlay topologies on existing networks need to be considered, especially relating to site logistics. The value of independent tilt between technologies has always been considered significant. Quintel has conducted a detailed network study using live network data and Symena’s ACP tools to quantify that LTE deployed on top of an existing optimized CDMA network using independent LTE tilt optimization generates over 26% throughput gains at the cell edges, as compared to using common tilt for CDMA and LTE.
